Akrotiri is the name of the one of the most impressive excavation sites of a Minoan Bronze Age settlement. Located on the south coast of Santorini, in the 16th century BC it was a thriving port town in touch with the major centers of the Aegean and the Near East. Certain historians hold this settlement, as well as the disaster that left it unknown to most of history, as the inspiration behind Platos story of Atlantis, as mentioned in his dialogues Timaeus and Critias. Akrotiri is associated with the Minoan civilization due to inscriptions in Linear A, and close similarities in artifact and fresco styles. Its grand, well-appointed houses were beautifully decorated with fine wall-paintings with primarily religious themes.Akrotiri was buried by the widespread Theran eruption in the middle of the second millennium BC (during the Late Minoan IA period); as a result, like the Roman ruins of Pompeii after it, it is remarkably well-preserved. Frescoes, pottery, furniture, advanced drainage systems and three-story buildings have been discovered at the site.
Pyrgos can be found at next high spot of Santorini, with panoramic views of the whole island all the way to the village of Oia. This hillside village was declared a protected settlement in 1995. On the hilltop we find the ruins of Kasteli Castle, one of the five kastelia on the island. Pyrgos is a typical Fortress Settlement of the Cyclades with traditional architecture, remains of neo-classical mansions, narrow winding paths leading up the hillside, small white houses, galleries, vineyards and churches.
